I think one of the biggest pros of Princess Cruises is their size and the range of opportunities they give you, both in terms of size of cruise ship but also destinations. At the moment, they have 17 ships but have many more coming – in the next couple of years they are going to have over 20 ships. The ships are quite small, with just under 700 guests, up to what I’m on now (Sky Princess) which has an incredible three thousand six hundred and sixty guests. The ship’s Asian-inspired decor and cuisine are a nod to its original purpose of catering to the Chinese market. However, it also has plenty to offer for American and European travelers. Among North Americans, the most popular itineraries are the longer ones, which often are heavily skewed to stops in New Zealand. You usually won't find a single Princess ship in the Caribbean and the Bahamas over the summer, when the line turns its focus to sailings in Europe and Alaska. But come winter, it'll reposition quite a few of its vessels to the Caribbean and Bahamas sailings, making these warm-weather Princess cruise destinations a top choice. Coral Princess is Princess’ smallest ship; however, there is still plenty to see, do, and experience on board. Guests can make themselves right at home in the piazza-style grand atrium, where prime people-watching awaits. For some R&R, grown-ups can head to the tranquil, adults-only Sanctuary while the kids are at play at the children’s centers.

The makeover brought the addition of an extensive traditional Japanese bath area — a first for a cruise ship — as well as a sushi restaurant. Menus in Diamond Princess's main restaurants and buffet feature Japanese items such as miso soup and noodles alongside Western fare. Despite its 3,000-plus passenger capacity, Crown Princess never feels super crowded thanks to abundant onboard amenities and activities. Highlights include three main dining rooms, a three-story atrium, and, of course, ample activities and programming, which run the gamut from basketball courts and pajama movie nights for kids to karaoke and an onboard nightclub. Finally, it’s also worth noting that the line ​​offers dozens, if not hundreds, of itineraries across the globe, including Alaska, Mexico, Japan, the Mediterranean, and many more.

While both lines offer a varied dining lineup, Princess comes out on top for overall food quality while Royal Caribbean has an edge when it comes to free eateries that kids will love. If you want to enjoy authentic Italian-inspired cuisine or excellent steakhouse dining, both Princess and Royal Caribbean have you covered. There's other overlap as well, but the differences between the dining options on each cruise line are primarily a matter of options, including the free ones. The seven Grand-class ships carry 2,600 to 3,100 guests, while the two smallest ships, Coral Princess and Island Princess, accommodate around 2,000 guests at double occupancy.
